- We round up the key satellite events happening over Memorial Day weekend.
- Memorial Day weekend in Detroit is all about Movement. But as well as the festival proper—which this year features Underworld, Akua, Zip, DJ Minx and dozens more—there are plenty of satellite parties happening simultaneously at clubs and venues across the city. Here are our picks. Browse the event listings below for more information.
Friday, May 26th
• Early arrivals can attend a free open-air block party at The Belt Alley featuring techno legend Eddie Fowlkes and other Detroit natives. • Another daytime option is the Moods barbecue with back-to-backs from Whodat and Tammy Lakkis, D. Strange and Blackmoonchild, and Souls Departed and Psy-Chick. • From 6 PM, smartbar and Haute to Death are organising a two-stage event at Marble Bar. As well as sweet treats and a sunset barbecue, expect sets from Eli Escobar, Eris Drew, Gay Marvine and more. • DJs from all over the world will gather at TV Lounge for Game On. Highlights include Batu, Jacques Greene playing acid and a live set from Sepehr. • Over at Tangent Gallery's Freakish Pleasures, Ron Morelli will take the stage, joined by other leftfield acts such as Sybil Jason, Nicole Misha and Tone B. • What better way to celebrate Detroit's incredible contribution to music than by heading to Spot Lite Detroit's Underground & Black Detroit 2023 - Motortown Revue Day Party? Don't miss Marcellus Pittman, Ash Lauryn, Max Watts and more. • Expect sets from techno icons old and new as Deep Detroit #13 takes over Red Door Digital. Delano Smith, Ash Lauryn and Kai Alce are among the acts tapped to play. • Return to the Source is a multi-stage, three-day event at Tangent Gallery. The Saturday session, Tresor 313, will feature the likes of DJ Stingray 313, Function, Erika pumping out heavy-duty techno and electro. • Club Toilet is for the LGBTQIA+ community. Menjo's is hosting this year's all-nighter with names like Kilopatrah Jones, Clark Price and T.Wan. • For another all-nighter, Texture is heading to Marble Bar with a stacked lineup that includes DJ sets from Ben UFO and Darwin, plus live sets from Giant Swan, Aurora Halal and Decliner.Sunday, May 28th
• No Way Back at Tangent Gallery is a Movement weekend classic. The No Way Back Room will host the likes of ADAB, Mike Servito and Erika, while the Outer Space Room has Christina Chatfield, Detroit Bureau of Sound and more. • If house music is more your thing, Sampled at Marble Bar will have Gene Farris, Mark Farina and Karizma, among others. • Michigan native Shigeto is hosting his TNT party at Spot Lite Detroit. Catch him alongside the likes of Todd Osborn, JTC and 4AM NYC.Monday, May 29th
• Back at Tangent Gallery, New York's The Bunker will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a cluster of back-to-backs, including DJ Nobu and Wata Igarashi, Octo Octa and BEIGE, and CCL and Sister Zo. • Meanwhile at Marble Bar, YES will be deep into its 22-hour runtime. Spinning at the marathon festival will be names like Move D, Boo Williams and Danny Daze, who is down for a sunrise set.Respect the Architects
For the second year running, Resident Advisor will head to Movement to host Respect the Architects, an exhibition recognising Detroit's unsung techno heroes.
