- Get ready for one of the year's biggest techno gatherings.
Movement, Detroit's long-running electronic music festival, takes over the Motor City this Memorial Day weekend.
Known by a few different names since its launch in 2000 (you'll still hear it referred to as DEMF), Movement is one of the world's most important techno events. The festival itself happens downtown at Hart Plaza, along the Detroit River, attracting some 100,000 ravers to six stages that together feature more than 100 artists.
For the first time ever, RA will host a stage at Movement, taking over the Underground area for the entire weekend with a robust techno lineup. The DJ contingent includes Ryan Elliott, DVS1, Drumcell and Matrixxman and Rebekah, while Function, Rrose and Sleeparchive are among those playing live.
As usual, the rest of the lineup mixes beloved local figures, like The Belleville Three (Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson), Carl Craig, Robert Hood and Terrence Dixon, with tons of national and international talent, including Cassy, Dixon, Richie Hawtin, DJ Harvey, Ben Klock and Honey Dijon.
Just as essential a part of the festival weekend are the many events going down all around the city, at all times of the day. Check out our RA Picks below—we've highlighted some of the best and most promising options, like No Way Back, Deep Detroit, Texture and Club Toilet—and head to our listings to find out more about what's going on from Thursday through Monday. Of course, there's likely to be parties that go unannounced ahead of time, so keep your eyes and ears peeled.
And remember: Movement weekend is a marathon, not a sprint. Prepare yourself accordingly.
