  • The Observatory, a pillar of Ho Chi Minh City's underground nightlife scene, has curated a month-long programme featuring regional and international names for its tenth anniversary celebration. From November through December, crews from Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan and Japan will each take over a night, showcasing the club's strong Asia-Pacific and international links. First up was The Observatory's own residents, including co-owner and founder Hibiya Line, earlier this month, followed by disco party Liên Hoan, Taipei institution Pawnshop and Hanoi's Savage club. This weekend, Giegling and Bangkok's Siamese Twins Records take the reins. Later in November will see Powder and other artists representing the Thinner Groove label, plus another Observatory residents night. Next month, Peter Van Hoesen and Wata Igarashi are due to perform a hybrid show, in addition to sets by Dee Diggs, San Soda and others. Tokyo collective Liminal Dreams and Ho Chi Minh City ambient party Nurture will also host a series of Sunday parties across November and December. The anniversary follows extensive renovations at The Observatory, now home to 18 residents. Its previous outdoor space has been outfitted with a new sound system and lighting, transforming into what the venue calls "a retro-futuristic tropical psychedelic garden." The Observatory, or OBS, has moved locations several times throughout the years, having been "subject to demolition and construction plans of Saigon's ever-dynamic growth," the team told Resident Advisor. Working in the music business "is still frowned upon here in Vietnamese society," they described. By employing more than 30 people, the club hopes to provide opportunities for a lasting career in the industry. For more insights on Vietnam's thriving nightlife, read our feature from 2022.
