- It's out on February 20th as the Ugandan collective goes on a tour across Europe.
DJ Diaki has joined the Nyege Nyege Tapes roster.
The debut album from Diaki Kone, one of the originators of the Malian Balani Show sound, is called Balani Fou—"Crazy Balani." Emerging in the late '90s and hitting the mainstream in the mid-'00s, Balani Show mixes tracks (first played on cassettes, later CDJs and now, most commonly, laptops) with live percussion from drum pads and synthesizers at upwards of 170 BPM. (Learn more about Balani Show and its history in FACT magazine's 2015 feature.)
DJ Diaki, who also works as a radio animator in Sanakoroba, says the tempo amps up even higher outside of the capital city of Bamako. "The people in the village want the music fast. If someone goes to my parties, it's impossible they dance the whole time."
Before Balani Fou is released on February 20th as a limited-editon double-cassette, 15 artists from the Nyege Nyege collective will tour Europe through March. Kampire, Authentically Plastic, MC Yallah, Debmaster, Hibotep, Afrorack, Catu Diosis, Moesha 13, Don Zilla, Jay Mitta and more will play across cities such as London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Warsaw, Krakow, Milan and Brussels, among other stops.
