  • Sanil Sudan, AKA FILM, is a familiar face in India's underground nightlife. Based in the country's capital city, he's long focused his energies on DJing, throwing club nights under the name Medium Rare and curating programming at popular venues like Auro Kitchen Bar and Summer House Cafe. He's now stepped back from promoting and bookings to focus on his solo projects, and the extra time is clearly paying off. Ditching his usual repertoire of atmospheric techno, thumping electro and IDM-influenced electronics, his new EP focuses on bouncy tech-house—a welcome sign of growth and versatility from the rising producer. Miwonowi is breezier and brighter than his earlier work. Compared to the low-slung techno on "Drill Masala," off his debut full-length last year, the trancey shenanigans on his new remix for Anfisa Letyago's label or the taut dub techno under his other alias, Tyrell Dub Corp, Miwonowi feels more playful. Rooted in Detroit techno and Chicago house music, it's jacking and groove-focused, but retains Sudan's signature traits—sparse, tightly-wound arrangements full of darting synth lines that feel like hissing wires and tactile, shapeshifting drums. It's as if the artist stepped out of his comfort zone but carried his favourite toys with him. "Polly," one of the EP's standouts, captures how Sudan's tried-and-tested production style thrives in this fresh context. Centred around dense kicks and synth bubbles that effervesce at the end of each loop like a freshly-opened soda, it's a belter that will appeal to wafters and deep house heads alike. Even on the busier title track, his control and laser-sharp timing shines through. Vibrant chords dance atop of a funky Afrohouse percussion sample while glistening synth waves stretch out for a blissful, euphoric touch. On the remix, DART ramps up the track's intensity through 909 workouts to achieve the gritty, 4 AM energy of a basement club. Unfussy and elegant, Miwonowi checks all the boxes for dance floor pressure: clean production, just the right amount of whimsical FX, plus the spirit of classic house and techno. This ability to change gears and experiment without compromising on personal taste is a sign of a producer in his element.
