  • Since debuting the project with a stunning EP on Hyperdub in 2021, Fiyahdred has been refining their blend of Afro house, gqom, UK funky and garage. Tracks like last year's "Vibrational Match" are infectious in their forward marching momentum and effortless genre fusion. It's a sound that feels both very UK and undeniably global. On their new EP for Club Djembe, Fiyahdred returns to the pop stylings of "Anyway (Do It)" for two very different—but always uplifting—takes on party-starting songs. "Overtime" brings in the South African influence most clearly, with a loose, warm groove that marries the tumbling cadence of UK funky with gqom and amapiano. There's a great brooding bassline underneath the whole thing, plus some healthy low-end spasms. The chords flicker like candlelight, keeping everything sultry underneath Fiyahdred's sultry vocal. "Overtime" is finished off by string and piano touches that make partying seem like something epic and dramatic—like the best Afro house and amapiano tracks—and it's hard not to get sucked into their appealing world of wining wastes and thrusting synths. Which brings us to "Wining Train," a faster, more lighthearted track complete with vocals imitating a train's whistle. The clattering drums feel like a callback to Scratcha DVA's UK funky fusions, with a dash of Roska in the skeletal, almost stiff groove.
