Black Girl/White Girl - Delusion

  • Precise and muscular techno that'll never go out of style.

  • "Primal Soul," the lead track from Dutch duo Black Girl/White Girl's latest EP, Delusion, lands at a particularly heavy moment in Truncate's recent RA Podcast. Coming off the industrial assault of Skov Bowden's "Unite," it's right as the LA techno master is hitting his middle-of-the-night stride. This track is all about the percussion, with drums frog-marching at an unrelenting pace (and check that cowbell in the back half), while little hints of a guitar lick try to break through. There are other bits of flair—a 303 here, a toothy bassline there—but "Primal Soul" is a cut made for when the dance floor is already full, and all the DJ needs to do is keep the momentum moving full steam ahead. The rest of Delusion is just as ferocious, focused and unshowy. That doesn't mean the tracks aren't filled with interesting details. There's a dubby delay on the chords in "Delusional Neurons," but it's been sped up so fast it feels like those chords might overstep the drum grid and launch into the abyss below. And if you're paying close attention, you'll notice a funky little hand drum that fights for air amidst the metallic swirl of synths, snares and kicks on "Explosure." On their last release, Black Girl/White Girl took a step back from making functional and fierce techno for something a bit different. It was an excellent release, but it lacked the precision of Delusion. This is techno that will always be in demand, no matter what trends come or go.
