  • Of all the one-word techno project names out there, Truncate has to be among the most descriptive. The name started as a name for David Flores's most pared-back tracks, different from the stuff he was making as Audio Injection at the time. As happens with people who are really good at techno—or just understand the genre fundamentally—Truncate's DJ tools took off quickly, because people in the scene could recognize the craftsmanship. You don't need more than a few elements to make something pop. Rather quickly, Truncate became Flores's main squeeze, bringing him to a new level of international attention and acclaim. Flores is part of a vibrant LA techno community that's probably never been more vibrant or diverse. He helped build the scene alongside producers like Drumcell, and now the city is home to several great techno parties every weekend. You'll see his name on the flyer of quite a few of them, though probably less now that he's an international star. His RA Podcast represents the ethos of not just the Truncate project, but his work writ large: stripped-back tunes, yes, but also electro and some choice vocal cuts. It's a vibrant look at capital-T techno, an approach to the genre that's about building on foundations instead of sticking to templates. What have you been up to recently? Currently on a European tour, been getting back in the studio working on some remixes and my next EP on my label. Also been lining up the next EPs from artists such as The Advent, Black Girl / White Girl and many more! It's exciting to sign a lot of newer upcoming artists and being able to expose them to a wider audience. A lot of good talent coming up right now! How and where was the mix recorded? And can you tell us the idea behind it? This mix was recorded in my living room on 3 CDJ-3000s and a Pioneer DJM-V10 mixer. I wanted to keep this mix more upbeat and clubby as I normally play. You'll hear mostly new stuff but also some classics thrown in with a little electro to cleanse the palate.   What's one club or party that had a major impact on you as an artist? Hate to be so cliché, but I would say Berghain has had the most impact on me. Since I started playing there way back in 2010 it has help shape my sound. I can't think of one other club which I played so often that lets me take the crowd in any direction I want playing anything I want. It really is a special place. Over the years, Truncate has become your main alias. Why did you start the separate project, and why do you think you've had so much success with it / have decided to stick with it as you have? Back in about early 2010 I started creating these simple stripped-down DJ tools and was labeling them as just Truncate 1, 2, 3, etc., and started passing them out to friends to play. It started to get the attention of more DJs and I started to get hit up a lot about them and I thought, "Maybe I'm onto something here." So I started to release music under the new alias Truncate and it just started to grow from there. Once I started the label more and more DJs started to play my music and then the bookings started to roll in. I guess the simplicity of the music is what caught the attention across different genres, from techno to house, to even tech house DJs. It was also more in line of what my influences were so I stuck with it.  You're part of a thriving but often overlooked techno scene in LA. What is special/unique/important about the LA scene to you? I wouldn't call Los Angeles over looked. We probably have the biggest techno scene in the USA right now. What makes our scene unique is the warehouse situation. There are really no proper clubs in LA so we have to resort to throwing illegal raves in warehouses that will also allow us to do what we want and go as late as we want. These warehouses are like a blank canvases for us and most clubs don't allow for that. We've built a techno scene in LA for the past 20 years and I'm proud to be a part of growth. We have come a long way from the earlier days but it makes me happy to see our city thriving with this music. What's one social or political cause you want the world to pay more attention to?   Not to sound controversial but I hope more people open their eyes to all the corruption going on behind our backs while we're so distracted with social media. We're being screwed more than we realize. We need to stop being so divided and worry less about our political affiliations. What are you looking forward to in the near future? Looking forward to finally taking a vacation… I don't know where and when yet exactly, but it will happen this year and I can't wait :)
