Opal Sunn - Proton Dance

  • Bright and sparkly house haunted by acid flashbacks.

  • Ever since their first 12-inch as Opal Sunn, Alex Kassian and Hiroaki OBA have been balancing the bright wanderlust of big progressive melodies with lean, slinky tech house grooves. Take last year's EP for ESP Institute. The drums are low-slung and funky while 303 lines and heart-wrenching arpeggios try to twist themselves out of the percussive latticework. This is what makes their latest track, "Proton Dance," landing on a five-year anniversary compilation from Gestalt Records, so fun. The low-end is swung and loose (almost tribal) and duo have it properly large with a gated chord progression as big as anything they've ever released. But just when it all starts to feel a bit too Ministry Of Sound, they bring it down to earth with some monstrous acidic squelches.
