Opal Sunn ‎- Part I

  • Opal Sunn is a collaboration between Hiroaki OBA and Al Kassian. Based in Berlin, the pair call themselves a "live-performance duo." As this might suggest, they own plenty of hardware and release music that's rough around the edges. But where many house acts who use on-the-fly recording methods lean towards aggressive sounds, Opal Sunn embrace sunnier textures. The project's first official release, Part 1 for Planet Sundae, comprises four dreamy house cuts. The tunes are atmospheric and don't have much low-end presence, but don't let that stop you packing them in your record bag. They're sneakily melodic with plenty of character, thanks to swarms of dainty synths that zing and zap above soft percussion. "Pluto," the house equivalent of kicking back with a beer in the sun, will come in handy during your next afternoon DJ slot. The EP's other tracks are tougher and vaguely acidic, with busier sound design and a bolder sense of melody. The groove is clearest on "Dinamo," with an intermittent clap and the EP's most robust kick drum. The track's riff creates an introspective mood, which is a fitting finale for an EP from a duo with a knack for positivity.
