Huerta - Liquid Social

  • A slightly darker take on the California producer's sun-soaked tech house sound.

  • Of all the current producers helping steer the tech house revival, Steve Huerta's productions are typically the lightest. I don't mean this pejoratively—he's always on point—but whether he's making loungey deepness for Slow Life or cranking out springy basslines for his own Leizure label, his records go down like a tall drink of water on a hot day. That's what makes "Liquid Social" a bit different. The chords have shifted to minor scale, sounding pensive and broody while his usually joyous bleeps and blops have got a hint of Nicolas Lutz-style meanness to them. Once you add the slithering bassline, it's clear that this is a Huerta track best enjoyed before the sun has cracked through the windows.
