DJ Octopus - Glue Monday

  • Introspective house inspired by New Order.

  • The Venetian producer DJ Octopus, real name Marco Zanin, has been releasing functional and crowd-pleasing house tunes since 2013, most frequently on DJ Haus's Hot Haus records. His most popular track to date, the ebullient "Bug Lady," got a bump from being featured on DJ Haus's 2017's compilation for Defected, DJ Haus In The House. His latest, Glue Monday, is the third release for the Florence party series and label Tropical Animals, and it finds Zanin in a more contemplative mode. "Glue Monday (Part 1)"'s unnerving bassline is a distant echo of New Order's "Blue Monday," pitched down and sticky. The mood is sombre and astral (it could have been a Correspondant release), befitting end-of-night introspection. It would make for a fine set closer. "Mechanical Action" does what its title suggests. The crunching metallic synths also seem to be inspired by "Blue Monday," specifically the clatter that opens it, but the energy is more propulsive and physical. That momentum continues on "Glue Monday (Part 2)," a bubbling mid-set alternative. "Calypso Signal" is housier, with an arpeggiated bassline, but it's more moody roller than peak-time cut. This release is DJ Octopus's most interesting and accomplished work yet.
