  • If you're anything like me, you probably haven't thought about Oliver Dollar since 2011, the year in which he released one of this decade's most divisive singles, "Doin' Ya Thang." That single, controversially built around a Moodymann monologue, was one of 2011's most-played tracks, rinsed by everyone from Joy Orbison to Solomun at parties all around the world. A disco-house bomb with well-chosen samples, it was a simple but powerful tune with massive dance floor potential, showing that Oliver Dollar's formula, whether you like it or not, works exceptionally well. "Jam Hot" sounds like it, too, was made in 2011. The first solo Oliver Dollar single since 2013, it's another sample-heavy house track with a big bassline and cheerful mood, with added crowd noises and a vocal that sounds ripped from a live funk or jazz show. But where "Doin' Ya Thang"'s groove stopped and started, the beat interacting with the vocals, "Jam Hot" just rolls. Preceding an Oliver Dollar album due out next year, this is a less creative effort that will still light up dance floors. Just don't take it too seriously.
