  • SØS Gunver Ryberg has become known for intensely powerful, no-holds-barred experimental techno. After an abrasive, beautiful debut on Contort, Gunver Ryberg collaborated with Aïsha Devi, Rrose and Paula Temple to bring Decon/Recon #2 to Temple's Noise Manifesto label. The collaboration has led to her own Noise Manifesto solo record, SOLFALD. Her talent for sound art is striking. On two early tracks, "Kredsløb" and "Another State Eurydike," the sound of drones passing by tickles listeners' ears unsettlingly. These sounds are sharp, commanding your attention. You can feel the tension rising as the clunky drum hits gather pace. This is the calm before the storm. Gunver Ryberg is a sound designer and a composer for video games, and it shows. Her pacing and skill at building suspense on SOLFALD makes your breath quicken, replicating the adrenalin that rises when something could be lurking around the corner in a game. The tension reaches a boiling point on "Op Ad Dybet," where Ryberg shifts into full-throttle techno and the presence lurking in the shadows is more intense. Where Ryberg's EP for Contort was focused on mighty percussive rhythms, SOLFALD is more varied, juxtaposing desolate experimental compositions with vigorous techno workouts.
