Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks - Two Way Here One Way Go

  • In a 2015 interview, Dennis McFarlane said Theo Parrish had been teaching him about staying locked into a groove while making tracks. McFarlane and Kaidi Tatham's Adam Rock Dissed!!, which came out on Parrish's Sound Signature label around the same time, showed how well an understated approach suited the pair. Since the summer of 2015, McFarlane and Tatham have worked on several records with Akwasi Mensah and Matt Lord, producers whose company seems to encourage a busy approach to layering and musical movement. They appear together again on Two Way Here One Way Go. Though melodically dense, "Two Way Here One Way Go" is initially straightforward. It's soon flipped on its head as a wave of reverbed mbira gives way to arps and organs. The somber piano chords opening "No Facetime (Errors)" suggest longing—the track also turns into a vehicle for tight, fusion-style synths. "BBQ," a disco romp and the EP's most focussed track, has the brightness of a player-select menu in an old video game. These tracks reaffirm that their creators are inexhaustible founts of funk.
