  • Korg is recreating one of its rarest and most sought-after synths. Originally released in 1977, the PS-3300 was a huge, 48-voiced, semi-modular polysynth, designed by the engineer Fumio Mieda. Only around 50 were made between 1977 and 1981, when Korg stopped production. The new PS-3300 FS (full-sized) will be identical to the '70s models except with one additional key, making it a 49-voice synth, plus MIDI and USB connectivity, and patch memory. Each note on the keyboard has three independent oscillators, multiple filters, envelopes and amplifiers, as well as micro-tuning knobs to tweak the pitch. The new models are being created under the guidance of Mieda, the original engineer. They will be made to order for a price rumoured to be around €13,000. Orders are expected to open later this year. The move echoes Korg's release of the ARP 2600 FS, ARP Odyssey and its own MS-20 FS, all similarly exacting recreations of vintage analogue synths. As yet, there's no word on the number of orders Korg will take or whether it will release smaller, cheaper versions of the PS-3300, as it did with these other vintage recreations.
