  • German firm Jomox is finally shipping its Mod FM synth. The hybrid instrument has eight voices created by digital oscillators that run through analogue filters and envelopes. Its oscillators employ frequency modulation (FM) to generate sound. This is a digital technique that uses one oscillator running at audio rates to modulate another. It's a technique that's been alive since the 1980s and is often used to produce metallic sounds. Mod FM is semi-modular and fits into a Eurorack set-up. It has four operators and two LFOs per voice. Each voice has its own CV/Gate input and individual output. There's also a stereo mix output for even and odd voices, a stereo delay and an inbuilt reverb. The synth is multitimbral, meaning each voice can play a separate sound, which can be triggered and output individually, allowing you to create four parts of a track on one machine. First shown at the Superbooth event in Berlin in 2021, the final development has taken until now—probably due in part to the chip shortage that followed the Covid-19 pandemic. Jomox has released many highly celebrated synths and drum machines in the past, such as Alpha Base, SunSyn and Resonator Neuronium, an experimental analog neural network synthesizer. Mod FM is available to order now, priced €1057.
