  • Korg has expanded its Wavestate range of synths. Two new 61-key versions are on the way and the classic three-octave version has been updated with more polyphony, more memory and more sounds. First released in 2020, the Wavestate is a digital synth that makes sounds by piecing together very short samples using a process called wave sequencing. The new Wavestate Mk II ups the polyphony to 96 voices from 64, and adds a new range of 1,042 wave sequences, 799 programs and 261 performances. Internal storage for loading your own sounds has also been increased to 4 GB. In addition, Korg has created two full-sized, 61-key versions—the SE and the SE Platinum. These offer 120 voices of polyphony and have a semi-weighted keyboard with aftertouch. Both SEs have metal enclosures, compared to plastic body on the three-octave version, and the Platinum has an aluminium control panel and stainless steel side cheeks. While 96 or 120 voices sounds like an absurd amount of polyphony, wave sequencing is designed to create complex, evolving sounds with multiple layers and textures. This means each note you press could use eight or more voices to create its undulating sound, hence the need for this huge number of voices. By creating its SE versions, in metal with nicer, five-octave keyboards, Korg is aiming to deliver an all-in-one wave-sequencing synth that could be the centre of a production studio or live set-up. Indeed, the presets that come with the new Wavestates demonstrate that the synth can create entire tracks with basslines, leads and drums incorporated into the same patch. Watch a demonstration of the Wavestate MkII and SE.
The Korg Wavestate Mark II is priced €899. The black SE is €2,199 and the SE Platinum is €2,399. All will be available in the coming months.
