- It's out March 12th.
Guedra Guedra is releasing an album.
Vexillology, the Moroccan artist's debut LP, is being released by On The Corner Records on March 12th. The 13-track release combines modern production methods with video and field recordings of various African cultural practices collected during his travels across the continent.
According to the vinyl booklet, the album "reflects the first epithets that are commonly miss-applied to the African continent, such as savagery and barbarism. The arrangements reference Sub-Saharan African and specifically Amazigh cultures from North Africa. Images of human animalism are reused in a move of reappropriation, driven by a percussive response to the ignorance of widely held stereotypes."
The artist explains, "When you use a studio to record, you won't find the real emotion that you would find in a natural environment or situation. Tribal music from Africa is a social practise, it must be played in a certain place, in a certain special moment and in the right environment, it's not something that can be 'recreated' in a studio. So for me capturing these moments when they are actually happening is so important, because that's the only way you can encapsulate the real rhythm of their practice."
Last year, Guedra Guedra's debut EP, Son Of Sun, received the RA Recommends stamp. You can preorder Vexillology via the On The Corner Records Bandcamp.
