- The six-track record features a tougher style of gqom known as uThayela, which translates as "corrugated iron."
DJ Lag's latest record comes through Mad Decent imprint Good Enuff.
The six-track EP is named for the club where the South African producer started DJing, in his home township of Clermont in Durban. He says Uhuru shows off a "rougher sound with a harder bassline," a sub-genre of gqom called uThayela, which translates to "corrugated iron."
The connection to Mad Decent came after DJ Lag played a back-to-back set with label founder Diplo. Uhuru features guest spots from frequent collaborator Moonchild Sanelly and Unticipated Soundz, a gqom collective who are signing to Lag's own label, Ice Drop.
Most recently, DJ Lag coproduced a track on the Beyoncé-curated Lion King soundtrack. He also put out an EP on Hyperdub with Okzharp in July.
