Psyburbia - Interstellar Mushroom

  • Having gained international recognition through steady radio rotation and rocking several large events, Psyburbia looks to cast its psylobic tentacles over 2003. Releasing tracks with psy label heavies Matsuri and Nova Tekk has let the whole world take notice of the duo; Baz and Angelpuss. Psyburbia's 7 track EP 'Interstellar Mushroom' proves to be a versatile release, possibly claiming that there is a little something for everyone here. Psy breaks, dub and electronica are the key elements. Interstellar Mushroom kicks off with "Urban Forest Odyssey" which really cuts loose with its breaks - this track actually reminded me much of Amon Tobin, which actually left me mesmirised as I thought I was going to be reviewing a psytrance EP! A pleasant suprise I assure you. This is followed by the philosophical "Mushroom Messiah". The thick Australian accents sampled give it a very unique touch and its very refreshing to hear home grown samples. "Crunch"'s break beat flavour crossed with a touch of Baz's special industrial background gives a perfect recipie for a main dancefloor effect - outdoor festivals please, please PLEASE! The next few tracks "Interstellar Filtersweep", and the remixes of "Mushroom Messiah" and"Interstellar Filtersweep" are strongly psy dub and ambient. As one of the remixers notes - "Doing the housework mix", play these tracks on the way home from a party or play on a Sunday arvo. Lastly Psyburbia very boldy claims the "First Tripper on Mars". Though, I can assure you during their previous sets there were quite a few already there on the dancefloor! This last track is one of my favourites - really spacey ambient dub, which gives lots of time for reflection. Nice. Picture sitting by a lake with crystallized melodies dancing with the sun. Oh, and a few mushrooms down the hatch an hour or two beforehand. All in all its a very good EP, which lays the foundation for a brilliant album to be released soon. Be on the lookout for it.
