Submerse - Bubblin

  • Perceived in the context of its originator and champion, Whistla, there's no reason to hate future garage. It's simply "a collection of DJs and producers that share a vision of what garage can and should be." And, at its best, future garage producers have been able to present innovative takes on the genre, with Cheshire-based producer Rob Orme, AKA Submerse, being among them. Known for putting out some of the most beautiful and bolshie examples of future garage, his discography swings between bumpy floor-driven bassline and poignant 2-step. Orme has even coined his own "j-garage"—a mix between western bass music (future garage, 130 BPM house and dubstep) with Japanese soundbites like vocals and anime samples. For the Cambridge-based Frijsfo Beats—a label that has been hovering for the last couple of years somewhere around the deep end of the dubstep pool, with artists like Geoim, Sully and Point B—we are treated to the soulful side of Submerse. "Bubblin'" is just that: Soft female vocals gently percolate through light, twinkly percussion and subtle chords in this sparkling number, while Frijsfo artist Kuoyah serves up a fizzier version, swinging the beat so far off kilter that at times you'll think he's lost it. Submerse is a producer of extremes—they're either bangers or heartbreakers—but here with have neither. Bubblin' is simply pleasant, with none of the pain.
