Dijkhuis - Dijkhuis #1

  • This first record on Seattle's recently launched Night Gallery offers three distinct cuts of electronic music covering the broad spectrum between cinematic electro and house music. Up first is "Hotel #19," a spatial synth jam which slowly unfurls itself like a fine Tangerine Dream or Jean Michel Jarre composition. Underpinned by a marching drum pattern and the sound of a woman singing in the distance, the track appears to set the scene for an epic showdown between warring alien factions in a far flung corner of the galaxy. While definitely on the nerdier side of electronic music styles, it's something that could work very well as an introduction to a techno set with a futurist bent. The second track here is a tad bit more pedestrian. While "You Can Bring It" brings a tight groove centered on a stuttered vocal sample, it's nothing you haven't heard before. It's the kind of functional, bouncy track that underpins the mixes of jocks like Derrick Carter and Jesse Rose. Rightfully owning an entire side of the wax, "Your Love Is Like..." is one of those rare tracks that strikes the difficult balance of putting forth a truly ecstatic melody over a funky groove. Opening with thick boogie keys, a female vocal sample repeats the phrase "my love is like" for several minutes, before the track reaches a crescendo where the protagonist informs us she'll love us forever. While this outpouring of emotion may be too much for some, for DJs willing to let the feelings flow, it's a true gem.
