Shinedoe - Bring It On

  • Shinedoe follows up last autumn's Ritmo Sumbreeze on her and 2000 and One's label Intacto with another track that heads straight for a dance floor groove, but with more techno rawness and weight. Overall, the body has ample amounts of character and motion, but this is unfortunately overshadowed by a rather bland vocal sample repeating the track's title ad infinitum. The first thing you notice when the needle hits the wobbly bit of the groove is the chunky drums, slapping down with swing and squelch. Brushed drums shuffle in a kind of patient, steady slow train of momentum. Later on, a nice pipe hitting riff gives moodiness and a touch of freakiness, while a brooding bass note growls underneath. All good stuff: "Bring It On" is well-produced, the sounds chosen with an experienced ear. It leans towards her introductory smash "Dilemma" in the way it works with a minimal number of elements to create maximum impact. The second thing you notice, about half a second in, is the sample. With the way it's pitched, it seems like the aim was to add tension and urgency, but with the amount it's repeated without changing, it ends up just feeling intrusive and tiring. It nods, like the drums, to times of yore, but feels hackneyed instead. The groove version takes the pipe riff and rolls it up into a ball, then sets it in repetitive motion for a more serious workout. The vocal's still there, though, once again marring a perfectly good track.
