Deymare - Talking About Your Love

  • Of Deymare's three tracks here, the most interesting is, funnily enough, the most conventional. "Your Love" and "Talking About That" are attempts at rekindling the rough soulfulness of mid-'90s Detroit house, but in their pursuit of percussive edginess they forgo the nuanced musicianship that made, say, a Theo Parrish record what it was. They're both very stripped back, relying on one or two Rhodes chords for a deepness which is certainly achieved, though driven by leaden beats, the tracks seem to drag somewhat, flatlining a soul that's trying to get out. "Tomorrow Was Yesterday," on the other hand, adopts a more regular house arrangement (syncopated hats, snares, stabs, livelier tempo) and consequently Deymare turns in an effortlessly cool and airy composition. Unlike the previous two tracks, melody takes the mantle of focus from the beats. The approach suits the Finnish producer as he guides a balmy chord progression over walking bass and funk guitar timbres with all the friendliness of a Larry Heard production. This and Ben Boe's crisply tight remix of "Talking About That" make for an auspicious b-side.
