Julio Bashmore - Chazm

  • There's a point around one-and-half minutes into Julio Bashmore's "Footsteppin'" that marks a culmination of sorts. In his sub-12 month career the young, Bristol-based house producer has breathed fresh air into the lungs of the Dirtybird label; remixed Mosca's "Square One" via Night Slugs to uproarious effect; and made a standout appearance on Fabric's maiden Elevator Music compilation. Yet when the purring Moog bass joins clipped garage samples and velvety synth chords at "Footsteppin'"s first break, you realise Bashmore has in effect tied a bow around his discography to date and moved things on to the next level. The track has in fact been kicking around (in Internet terms) since the beginning of January when Deadboy dropped it in the early stages of his FACT mix. That he utilized it in a section that included Three Chairs, Martyn and Theo Parrish is a neat indicator of the track's strength in depth. The A-side of this 10-inch blue vinyl is "Chazm" which naturally doesn't peak at its counterpart's levels, but succeeds in illustrating the more Funky-inspired end of Bashmore's range. Despite ticking the syncopated snares and heavily modulated lead-line boxes, Bashmore—true to past form—pulls back from the precipice of a post-break tear-out, instead alluding to the chaos by showing us how fantastic his bassline is.
