Lost Trax - Lost Trax 2

  • Some time before the current glut of anonymous vinyl 12-inch—2006 to be exact—a release simply called Lost Trax landed on SCSI-AV. While a good deal of that UK electro label's output had focused on complex, dance floor electro rhythms, this EP by an unknown artist gave SCSI-AV a breath of fresh, spacey air. Like an update of UR's more esoteric, reflective style, "Saturnine System" was a glorious, acid-riddled ode to a time long past in techno. You'd expect a more opportunistic label or producer to cash in on such a benchmark record with an identical release, but it was followed only by a deafening silence, which only added to the intrigue. Fast forward four years and the second instalment has finally landed and, unsurprisingly, it mines a similar path. Evocative strings, a bleeding, surging acid line and a skipping, shuffling beats all re-appear on "The Sequel." It sounds like the author is trying to refine the sound Underground Resistance created on "The Final Frontier," but the addition of some beautifully hazy melodic textures ensure Mad Mike won't come knocking. "Birth" makes nods to another Detroit-inspired sound, with its purring bass reminiscent of Suburban Knight. However, this is only a starting point and the brittle claps and crystalline synth lines transpose it to a new, previously unimagined space. These descriptions still do not do Lost Trax 2 justice. In fact, I cannot recommend it enough: Let's just hope that whoever's behind it doesn't leave another four years until the third volume appears.
