Unknown Artist - Secrets 1

  • It may be hard to believe that a mysterious 12-inch sporting a palm frond-framed sunset for its label art would sound "Balearic," but this two-track single inverts expectations just enough so that one might want to inspect the smears of gold and pink light for a dead body in the shadows or rocket ship photoshopped into the sky. Speculation remains high for the origin of Secrets (a few whispers say it's from NYC, a few others say that it's "wrong" to ask), but the first side opens with an Italo disco underpinning. Fat synth squirts set the table for a higher register squeal as a six-pack of canned handclaps get cracked open. The real surprise comes from the skronking sax and mellow flute dueling it out. File it with Prins Thomas's Major Swellings and other playful, spacey, wholly unclassifiable edits. On the flip, a truly Balearic tune comes out, with echoing patois in between the beat. More flute looses itself from gravity and a gentle Caribbean melody sways and lightly steps, but the beat and upticks of guitar coagulate just enough to keep you swaying in your sandals.
