Unknown Artist - Horizontal Ground 003

  • There seems to be a code on the front of these Horizontal Ground releases, but damned if I can figure it out. It contrasts nicely, however, with the straightforward simplicity of the imprint's output, their remit seemingly a no-nonsense brand of techno that does little to hide its intentions. "All the Way Back" may hide the voice repeating the title phrase, but it does so only for effect, bringing it to the fore every so often to scare the wits out of you while its pinging melody plays over and over and over again. At 12 minutes, it may seem a bit lengthy for the amount of things going on, but the unknown producer does exactly enough to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. I've neither been a ghost nor on acid, but "Ghosts on Acid" seems to me to be a pretty accurate representation of what might happen if both of those things came to pass. (One can only hope.) Notes float off into the ether, rarely coming back down to rest. And, in between all of this, a clanging hat pummels the midrange along with an unrelenting kick drum. It's a freaky little tune, and one that makes you want to try to crack that infernal code all over again.
