Agnès / Jonny White - Split One

  • In a little under two years, Ripperton's Perspectiv imprint has become a very prominent name in the house community. They've put out release after release of imaginative and original tunes by a broad range of artists, some known and some not, many of which come from the label's home country of Switzerland. Clearly there's worth in what the label mantra suggests: "To give music makers an opportunity for long-term self-expression." Starting off a new series of split 12-inches, Ripperton has tapped one of Switzerland's most well-known house producers, Agnes, and paired him with the brilliant young Canadian producer Jonny White. Agnes delivers a bouncy, dub-bassline monster with "Que Pena." It chugs along with amazing power for such a relatively laid-back track, with its bobbling bass lick and cavernous guitar stabs taking care of the foreground. The harshness of the hi-hat is countered nicely by the spacey, simplistic design, but halfway in a haunting vocal sample works its way in, giving the cut an organic breath of fresh air. On the flip, the young Canuck quickly moves in on the listener, continuing the creepy vocal vibe and layering it over his always impressive percussion work on "Tikkun Olam." An energetic bassline is accompanied by sprinklings of bells and a warping, twisting pad that layers itself nicely over the majority of the track. Talented producers, and an open-ended ethos. It seems like such a simple formula, but Perspectiv is one of the few that has mastered it. Yet again, they've come through with soulful, dubby house tracks aimed smartly at DJ crates around the world.
