- It's always fascinating to see the paths taken by members of successful partnerships after the duo agrees to spend some time apart. Dubfire went minimal, Sharam simply wanted to party all the time. And while Dorfmeister continues to create no hassle music with Tosca, Kruder is on a different, far more interesting path which has seen him produce for DJ Hell, as well as on his own.
Kruder's other 2009 EP, Visions LTD, was a solid bit of tech house, but it's nothing compared to this assured two-tracker for Macro. Stefan Goldmann's imprint seems to bring out the slightly quirky side of artists, but this is a rather conventional release. "Chordal" utilizes pinprick synths to punch out its melody, but it's far from the sort of atonal colors of Raudive's earlier Macro offering. Instead, we simply have a probing and prodding eight minutes of light and mildly funky techno to contend with.
"Law of Return," which features on Dixon's Temporary Secretary mix is the clear highlight of the two, with its slow-building cinematics a clear ringer for the sort of drama that Dixon specializes in. The track twinkles, brass moving underneath, a drawn out choir overtop. In a perfect world, this is what Kruder & Dorfmeister's could've evolved into together. But that's why partnerships break down. Some artists want to move forward, while others are content to plow the same field over and over and over again.
