Ruthit - Not a Problem

  • Manchester's relative house newcomer Ruthit sets out his stall from the off, with organic sounds clearly being his production preference. On one hand, that's to be expected from a label which charts Loco Dice and Martin Buttrich, but on the other it's always weird how a Bristol label (a city known for its prominent bass predilections) sounds so different to all of its contemporaries. There's a salt shaker glide to "Not a Problem" which is punctuated with sounds clearly made by a machine, but which retain a remarkable sense of richness and warmth. The contrast between tight and involved percussion, loose and bleeding bass and scattered toms is a stark one, but somehow it all comes together. Altogether punchier (though that's not a poor reflection on the original) is "Cameronian (RIP)" which drives that little harder into build-up rather than come-down territory, straying into a more carnival flecked corner. And finally, the "Not a Problem" flip is a trip: down into an afterhours basement it goes, ebbing and flowing in its lead between a pulsing, sonorous bottom end and prying chord loop. There are enough juxtapositions in this MyMy interpretation to stray from mundanity, while remaining a melodic and deep sense overall, firming up an already solid release.
