Frozen Border - Frozen Border 03

  • Let's not waste too much time pontificating about who may or may not be behind this series of releases and let's assume that the anonymous presentation means that the author doesn't want us to guess his/her identity. Indeed, the only relevant information is what the third in the Frozen Border series sounds like. While the first installment drew heavily on '90s Mills and Hood techno and the second release got cosy with the repetitive techno-house loops so beloved of Hardwax labels, this one navigates a path between these sounds. The A-side is based on a tracky rhythm that has the spiky insistence of a Norman Nodge production, but which is deployed using a fat, rolling bassline and warm, textured chords. The flip side offers an even more adventurous hybrid, starting with the clatter of complex, doubled up rhythms and mysterious synths. It appears to be going nowhere fast, albeit in a pleasantly hypnotic manner, until a droning, building riff emerges. This is the cue for the track to morph into a dance floor based arrangement, with the skipping rhythms now accompanied by dubby beats. 3 is unlikely to gatecrash the Beatport top sellers chart or even feature in an end of year "big tunes" list, but if you're looking for a record rooted in techno's past and present, then this is for you.
