Nick Maurer - Beautiful Person

  • As the voice of merry house pranksters the Greenskeepers, Nick Maurer's unique delivery was just off-kilter enough to be memorable yet strangely endearing—somehow capable of implanting "it rubs the lotion on its skin" (from the Buffalo Bill homage "Lotion") into the heads of seemingly normal people, and poking fun at himself in classic gems like "Should I Sing Like This?" So perhaps it might come as a surprise to hear "Beautiful Person," Maurer's solo debut on Lady D's digitally resurrected D'lectable Music imprint. Sure, the trademark oddball vocal delivery is intact, but Maurer sings perhaps as straightforward of a love song as possible, using his self-harmonized vocals to add a melancholic touch to the simply crafted dance-pop-meets-Thomas Dolby that's as virulent as whatever livestock flu is attacking us this week. "Stuck in front of you, eyes are looking through, hanging on the times that came and went," he sings without a hint of irony. A warm and familiar bump from Maurer's former hometown of Chicago emanates from the house remix, which expands the original radio-friendly length to a DJ-friendly six-and-a-half minutes, with all the quirky pops and quacks and playful spirit expected from a Greenskeeper. Listen to it a few times, and you'll be certain to be humming along to the melody, or serenading your summertime love.
