Chaton - +91 Ahead Session 3

  • Call me ignorant, but it's hard to tell exactly what Chaton has Dachsund and John Daly remixing here. (And Ripperton and Agnès on + 91 Ahead Session 2 for that matter.) Is it various sessions for the track "+91 Ahead"? Or is it the material found on + 91 Ahead Session 1 named in a confusing way to keep us off the trail? Whatever the case, both packages of + 91 Ahead Session thus far have been solid bits of functional house and this edition is no different. Dachsund's session is dubby house that puts its cymbal high in the mix and rides out a groove in unassuming fashion. Trumpets float in, a Jamaican vocal is sampled, the sound design is impeccable. It doesn't do anything special, and it isn't particularly great, but it gets the job done without much fuss. And sometimes there's something to be said for that. Fuss, however, should be made of John Daly's version, which is simultaneously chunky and lithe dub house that concentrates far more on the house part than its predecessor. It starts off innocently enough with the same sort of chords you've heard hundreds of times before, but at some point Daly decided to make this thing special, adding a melancholic harmony that plays against the established mood beautifully. It transforms what could have easily been an anonymous remix of Chaton's mysterious source material into something special indeed.
