Mountain People - Mountain005

  • These guys are called the Mountain People. And their label is called the Mountain People. And their tracks are mostly called ‘Mountain 001-005’. That's a lot of mountains. On the lowlands the duo are also known as Serafin and Rozzo, two Swiss producers who've risen to prominence in the last year. Theirs is an old fashioned success story: they released some EPs that people liked, and when that worked, they released a few more. If you've been following them to date, then you'll be glad to hear that the latest sermon from the mount (sorry) is yet another interesting twist on the duo's psychedelic deep house sound. First up is ‘Mountain 005.1’, a hypnotic and percussive piece of house that's built around a few submerged melodies and a lot of reverb. If the best dance tracks are the ones that can make what's ostensibly a loop seem like a set of sounds you want to hear for minutes on end, then this is fit to stand with them. This isn't just music to dance to, it's music to bask in. On the flipside ‘Mountain 005.2’ is a little more evocative of past Mountain breezes like ‘The Move’, with keyboard tones that suggest morning nightclubbing slowly morphing and growing over Kerri Chandler style rhythms. There's no doubt that some may find this European take on classic deep house to be heresy, especially when you consider that trance seems to be the added ingredient. But given how consistently great the results are for Mountain People, most listeners will be glad to be heretics. Just take my shoes off before burning me at the stake.
