Jörg Burger - Polyform 1

  • Jörg Burger’s latest 12” on Kompakt’s K2 sub-label is an absolute gem. It’s two differently styled tracks of wonderful pop-techno as you would expect from one of the masters of the genre. The A-side ‘Nova Check’ is the dirtier and the more promiscuous of the two, like a sweatier voluptuous version of some of Burger’s tracks under his Modernist moniker. The low-down busty bass beat seduces with obscene gestures and wanton glances from the pulses of echoing synth and the lighter flickers of snare and percussion. It turns away just in time to avoid committing to a kiss only to begin again the teasing game with more temptuous writhing and pouting sensuality. ‘Polyform 1’ on the B-side begins with what sounds like a sample from Pharaoh Sanders’ ‘Astral Travelling’, only granularised, but with the same elegantly wasted and contemplative ambience. The beat is immediately more perpetual and sensual, as are the lighter and more gently caressing sparks of melody. The beauty of this track is the delicate, unfolding release of honeyed chimes and echoes. How Burger makes these sounds oscillate so endlessly into the distance only to return so differently, without ever disappearing completely, is a mystery, but it makes you want to lose yourself peacefully in there. Spell binding and as brilliant as his collaboration with Mike Ink on the seminal ‘Las Vegas’ album.
