The Martinez Brothers - My Rendition

  • This is the second release on Dennis Ferrer's new label Objektivity, and it's a great slice of dubby, tech-inflected house which shows an outstanding degree of maturity on the part of the artists, who are, amazingly, a mere fifteen and eighteen years old. There's nothing particularly innovative about ‘My Rendition’, but it does what it does magnificently. It's textbook organic New York with heavy nods to Detroit and Basic Channel, and the combination is a classic slab of early 21st century sonic science. You could imagine this could have been hammered at Body and Soul at its height with ‘Groove la Chord’ coming out of its rear end. Pieces like this use the space between the notes as cunningly as the notes themselves, and things are further stripped down on the B-side where the TMB Bonus Beats mix retains the batucada-like backbone for a strictly percussive workout. But it’s the hypnotic original that you'll be hearing more of though. Ben Watt is a fan and maybe it's a bit premature to call these boys the next Masters at Work, but this is a timeless piece of music that, whilst not necessarily recalling the best of Louis and Kenny, would enhance the set of any DJ right across the house/techno spectrum. It's a measure of the brothers embryonic talent that they already host a weekly radio programme (‘Nurtured Soul Sessions’ on Pre Party Radio), and have been guests at celebrated NY outposts The Shelter and 718 Sessions. They've also been over to Europe, playing Paris, and by the time you read this, clubs in Italy and Spain as well. If Steve and Chris Martinez carry on producing goods like this once they’re out of high school, then the sky’s the limit.
