Holy Ghost Inc. - Mad Monks On Zinc (Reborn)

  • Dusted off and reclaimed from the vaults, Holy Ghost Inc's early '90s gem is reborn almost sixteen years later courtesy of Adultnapper and a man who's never out of work - Martin Buttrich. Tales recounted of heady days at clubs like the Planet in Berlin precede this release, back when most of us were still in school, as evergreen techno merchants like Messrs Vath and Weatherall spun hallowed tones amidst smiling ravers – ah, the good times. Adultnapper's rolling take on the original has a Dirt Crewy edge, cutting out any old-skool reminising in an instant. There's enough insanity here to give you and all of your neighbours a headache though: the overused echo becomes the track’s crescendo, the sheer irritability of which will surely drive most weekend warriors round the twist. Quite possibly getting spins from tech house DJs such as Mr. C. With one side all to himself on the vinyl pressing, Martin Buttrich works a deep vibe from start to finish with a remix that has the Hope label sound stamped all over it. Much akin to his recent 'Totally Alright' affair, this modest offering isn't exactly pushing the envelope with its familiar prog leanings. Opting for a smoother, safer ride by discarding all traces of menace, this one's bound to become a feature in a few club sets nevertheless. I may be a nostalgic amnesiac at heart but it’s the original with its breaking beats, beautifully trippy piano and sub boom which still does it for me. Not a million miles from The Black Dog or Acen's 'Window in the Sky', this music recalls a time when rules were few and track structures weren't so set in stone – the age of innocence before the fat cats truly took control. Truly deserved of the term 'classic'.
