J-Mekka - Come On & !

  • Much like the internet radio show, the iBreaks label is all about breaking new acts with artists like Janette Slack, Nitro, Peter Paul, Tom Tonic and label boss J Mekka all releasing tunes backed with remixes from new and established artists such as Slyde, Groove Allegiance and the Rogue Element. Following up his previous release ‘Zilly Zozzage’, J-Mekka lays down the ravey ‘Come On & !’ with Italian breaks master Santos on the remix. The original cuts straight to the point with a trance/rave synth hook which sits atop a breakbeat. The ravey hook here is the main focus point as it certainly fills the room with counter synth melodies to back it up. To emphasise the ravey-ness of this tune, big, feel-good female vocals are added to give it that really uplifting feel. What I don't like about the tune is that the drums sound really thin and don't carry the beat too well, and even worse is the breakdown that goes on just short of two minutes - with today’s short attention spanned youth, it's probably best to bridge this one with a beat from another tune. Perhaps this would sound better in a big warehouse environment with the beats pitched up to 140bpm - I've yet to try it though. Santos' remix on the flip takes on his much-lauded house breaks crossover style and he provides the fatness that the tune deserves. Right from the word go, Santos lays down a fat 4/4 beat and slowly builds up the pressure with heavy sweeps right until the first breakdown. During the breakdown, Santos introduces a rolling bassline that plays till the end with the ‘Come On’ vocals repeating at random intervals. This remix always works on the floor thanks to Santos' rolling build ups that are known to get the hands in the air. This is the version that I'm going to back.
