Cereal Killaz - Reality/Sheshone

  • Since the fledgling days of nu-skool breaks, Mechanoise has seen some of breakbeats most notorious producers in their ranks including Sonz Of Mecha, DJ Mutiny, Quest, 2 Sinners, Lawgivers (R Kidz & Noise), Ed209 all of which have clung to the label's ethos of delivering the tougher and darker sounds of breakbeat. In 2006, Mechanoise has spread its wings and started a family of sister labels and have signed up the new kids of the tearout breaks sound. One such crew are newcomers, the Cereal Killaz who step up to the plate with 2 heavy hitters. With an opening sequence that sounds like it's been lifted off a sci-fi movie soundtrack, Reality doesn't take long to break out a big rolling drum break which is reinforced by a hollow bass note and a dirty growling electro lick. As the tune moves on, it incorporates a hip hop vocal which constantly reiterates that it is "movin' on" before the rhythm drops off into a dark vocal breakdown. Once the beats return, a massive rollercoaster of a bassline comes into play taking the bass into a series of peaks and troughs - if that's their vision of reality, it certainly is twisted! Sheshone on the flip starts off with a percussive break, slightly funky in some ways with a latin influenced congo hook throughout. Added to the intro are subtle synth stabs but once the bassline kicks in, the tune takes on a more sinister tone with haunting synths only adding to the tune's dark feel. During the breakdown, the tune takes on a very eastern feel with the Cereal Killaz laying down a Middle Eastern style vocal sample as well as switching the bassline melody for a completely new one. For those who like their breakbeats on a dark tip will definitely feel the sinister vibes on this release and possibly take their aggression out on the nearest bowl of cornflakes.
