Melbourne Breaks Unite

  • Three things are getting big lately: tamagotchis, acid-wash and charity music events. OK, scratch the first two and focus on Melbourne Breaks Unite, a cracking party last Saturday night with (approx) 598 DJs playing 14 hour sets each for free, with all proceeds going to the Starlight Foundation. I’ll give you 5 that tickled the toes: Blueprint knocked out a triumphant DJ set, using the (radio voice) 'killer retro stylings' of Big Pig's Breakaway7 and melding into a fiery percussive anthem. If I was cheesy I would type 'Anthem Alert' but I wouldn’t dare do that… and I wouldn’t dare suggest Glenn Rogers releases a cheeky bootleg of it. Blueprint rode the ebb and flow of the room, spicing the tempo up for the last 20 minutes with spankable basslines. Lilmissbreax looked panicky trying to figure out the strange DJ set-up, but quickly found her feet and nailed Moguai's 'U Know Why', giving us something to scream along too and make that 'Whaooow' sound effect. Top notch. Gsan felt the Funky Breaks room needed hip hop and plenty of soul, pinned down by raw breakbeats. His mixing was fairly good, but after he handed the reins over to Ides, she stepped it up. Ides hit us up with party breaks, creating that lovely moment where ¾ of a siderooom decides their legs are actually quite up for dancing. Ditto arms, shoulders, and pelvic areas. In our politest voice, Members Only requested some deep and funky shit, to which she winked "You must know my set", taking it to a place where hips kept hopping. Choice choonage. Meanwhile, Rollin Connection were the choice chaps of the night, wriggling and wrangling slabs of spaced out Delorean tek-breaks that had half the crowd dancing and the other half picking their jaws up off the floor. Darius Bassiray & Daniel Banko dropped in shit Meat Katie and James Zabiela would salivate over. In between peaks they unraveled scorching breakdowns that abseiled across the main room and had everyone going appropriately mental. The Darkbeat duo are heading to infinity and beyond, try and catch them if you can.
