- Remakes have been done to death over the last few years yet the tradition is still going strong. Some are good and some are, well, let’s just say we’d prefer it if producers thought more forwards than backwards. But when a dance mix of a classic track that’s as yummy as gumdrops and chocolate lollipops pops up, well, you can’t help but want a piece of it. New York radio jock DJ Animal tweaks an old eighties favorite into a fun little number with his 2006 mix of Last Chance.
The sound of Cyre’s vocals from Animal’s original mix instantly transports the listener back to the glitzy nightclubs of the era. Cyre “Lisa Lisa” vocals kick the track off over simple layered kicks and chimes, which don’t quite bang in the NY Style that we know and love; it’s only when Cyre starts Latin freestyling over the forceful rhythm that the crowd will be truly pleased. Hints of disco give the track a retro feel that will be mindless fun to play out. Features live guitar playing by Brass Construction.
The flipside features dub, instrumental, and a radio edits, though none of these hold up to the vocal mix. The dub sounds the same as the instrumental and feels a tad superfluous. ‘Last Chance’ will certainly make a lot of New York listeners happy during the spring season.
