Rebecca Goldberg - Bónus

  • If there's one thing Detroit artist Rebecca Goldberg knows, it's acid—take previous EP titles like 313 Acid Queen and ω−3 Fatty Acids for example. There's no "acid" in the title of her new 12-inch for Detroit Underground, but rest assured, Bónus provides plenty of the good stuff, especially on its title track. Big room reverb and white noise effects are used for evil here (or good, depending on your perspective), creating, a thick, close atmosphere like smoke slowly filling the room. Eventually the effect turns inside-out and dubby, until you can barely tell where one drum sound ends and the next begins. The belligerent acid lead comes back in to clear the air, and the drums only get more rambunctious. A lot can happen in under five minutes. Goldberg's take on acid is both faithful and irreverent, which makes the whole Bónus a solid EP for anyone who needs some new old-fashioned squelch.
