  • If you were expecting more brass-embellished, jazz-adjacent funk from Silkie, think again: his latest project, under his given name Solomon Rose, is no-frills UK garage. Minting the UK producer's new label, Bedroom Rat Records, the release harks back to the genre's early years. Nostalgia backed by real talent and production chops can rise above mere navel-gazing, and that's exactly what Silkie pulls off on this EP. Both sides focus on a different style of UK garage, made with the confident swagger of a gifted artist recreating their halcyon days from memory. The romantic half, "Dance For Me," layers mush-mouthed vocal samples between bevelled chrome stabs and a deceptively complex organ bassline. It's the kind of song that pairs naturally with a slosh of champagne. The track falls in the same cohort of revivalist production from the likes of Los Angeles' Introspekt, nailing the key fundamentals that escape some others: the sharp but soulful swing, the basslines that push without fully shoving. The more muscular "TFC" is built on a four-on-the-floor pattern, which makes the hustle and bustle of the chords and vocal chops feel topsy-turvy, yet still locked in, like a rollercoaster flipping thrill seekers upside down. Silkie has almost two decades of dance music production behind him—it's no surprise that he would take to UK garage naturally, but this is some next-level music that makes you wonder why it took him so long to try. Better late than never.
