  • Answer Code Request & Amotik is a match made in ethereal techno heaven, though their first release on Delsin is surprisingly subdued. Made after a series of back-to-back DJ sets over the course of a few months, LED is the work of two artists deeply in sync with one another. Their differences sublimate into a pleasantly perfumed haze. Instead of going for the heavy-duty techno of Amotik 12-inches or Answer Code Request's emotional reveries, these three tracks keep the listener at an arm's length, with slippery broken drum patterns and synths that hint at a climax that never comes. "Wide Range," the EP's most epic track, features a beautiful sustain synth that teases decadence and then always resolves differently than you'd expect. It loops back in on itself instead of pushing the track forward—a bit like a Berghain version of Detroit beatdown music. The other two tracks have a surprising influence—a Baltimore club kick pattern—and they too are shrouded in the atmospheric smoke you hear on many Amotik solo records. Breakbeats jump out of the carefully built framework of "LED," which builds up more than "Wide Range" but still has a minor key climb down towards the end. "Hazardous" hints at a tantalising trance direction, with fungal synth leads that swirl and throb like mycelia making their way through the earth. More concerned with mood-setting than banging it out, yet still powerful and bottom-heavy, Answer Code Request & Amotik's first collaboration is a refreshingly weird take on breakbeat techno.
