- Ilian Tape's first disco house tune, almost.
- Swiss producer Deetron revived an old alias, Soulmate, on Ilian Tape last year. On paper, it seemed like something of an odd pairing: the fabled home of bass-heavy techno linking up with the guy behind the euphoric piano house anthem (and Space Ibiza closer) "Photon"? But that EP struck an interesting middle ground. Deetron's usually glossy house and techno productions were roughed up with some bad boy bass heaviness. The follow-up, Path, gets the balance even better. On EP highlight "Zoom," layers of loose hand drums close in on each other as Deetron teases a disco string sample. But rather than giving us full Saturday Night Fever release, the strings only work as an accent alongside some rusted piano chords. Like glitter falling on an abandoned warehouse floor, it's euphoric and industrial in equal measure.
