Vice City - No Bomb Just Kung Fu Penguins

  • Murky downtempo with nature-influenced sound design and serious bass weight.

  • Born and raised in Taipei, Vice City makes music inspired by evolving ecosystems. Her fascination with nature is reflected in her productions: opalescent synths shimmer like dewy leaves, feral acid squelches ribbit like bullfrogs and the loose, lumbering cadence traces out a forgotten forested trail. Her tracks are living landscapes full of fluttering creatures and shadowy fog, evoking awe and humility. For Taipei label 禁 JIN's latest compilation (which celebrated Taiwan's National Day on October 10th), she crafts a six-minute saga of dubby downtempo, IDM and thundering passages of oscillating bass wave. Like any biodiverse habitat, "No Bomb Just Kung Fu Penguins" features all kinds of sounds—avant-garde FX, meditative drums, manipulated vocal samples and poignant synth lines—that could very well come off messy, but the Taiwanese producer makes it work. Delicately arranged and flowy, this is a must for fans of mystical dub and cinematic mise-en-scène.
