  • The title of Pugilist's new EP says it all. The lead track is truly vintage with an eerie flute riff, muttering vocals and a first drop that dives headfirst off a cliff. Echo and delay are turned up to 11. There's so much space between the kick drums that you could walk through it. And the wobbling LFO bassline is delightfully off-kilter, eventually turning belligerent in the middle section with a series of triplet notes that send it into bedlam. A snare roll appears every once in a while to let off some steam, but otherwise "Vintage" is a pressure cooker of a track on a monstrous dubstep EP that also includes mole-digging-a-tunnel madness ("Wistful") and techno-dubstep hybridism circa 2009 ("Amethyst"). Like a 20 year-old jacket in a corner of a thrift store, Vintage's provenance is obvious but it hasn't lost any of its lustre.
