- The dedicated clubber probably sees some dance floor friends more than their roommates. Who needs bedroom shut-eye when there are green room couches and magic supplements that will keep the limbs moving for hours? Ploy's new EP for Timedance, For when we haven't slept, is all about the ecstatic music that motivates the weekend shuffle from club to club—or for advanced ravers, the weekend stay at one special venue. The concept of the musical ode to the club isn't novel. The EP follows a wave of nostalgic projects released post-pandemic, such as Anz's All Hours, that guided listeners from night to day on the dance floor.
Concept aside, the EP is just what you'd expect from the London-based DJ, known for trembling basslines, addictive chopped vocal samples and weighty drums. "Crazy Bby" is full of bat signals to the dance floor: stalking drums, a looping falsetto vocal run and a bellowing low-end. "Rose" is a weapon tantamount to a jolt of caffeine. It's easy to imagine the track's wavering vocals, mesmerizing polyrhythmic claps and sitar-sounding sample, perking up droopy-eyed stragglers when the pearly morning sky erupts. "Finally" tempers the record's peak-time bent, its relaxed dembow rhythm misting over with gently reverbed melodies and a vocal hook so distorted, it sounds like you can hear each sound wave moving through each vibrating air molecule.
